Why do we get rosacea?

What is rosacea?

Rosacea affects up to 1 in 10 of us, and is a long-lasting inflammatory skin condition that mainly affects the skin on our faces. It’s most commonly found in people with lighter skin tones (though it can affect any skin tone) and while it can develop at any age, usually affects people after the age of 30. The main symptoms of rosacea are flushing, redness, spots and dilated blood vessels. It usually affects the centre of the face, but it can also affect the eyes, too. The underlying cause of rosacea is complex and not fully understood , but it’s thought to be influenced by several factors. These include genetics, the immune system, micro-organisms (like the Demodex mite), damage from ultraviolet light and dysfunction of blood vessels.

How do I know if I’ve got rosacea?

Rosacea can cause several different symptoms, including persistent redness of the central face, spots, flushing, skin sensitivity, dilated blood vessels, eye issues and thickening of the skin on the nose. Multiple factors have been found to cause worsening of the symptoms of rosacea, including drinking alcohol and hot drinks, eating spicy foods, exercising and exposure to extremes of temperature. If you have rosacea then you’ll usually have a combination of the above symptoms. There are thought to be four main subtypes of rosacea, determined by the combination of symptoms you have. Rosacea can often be confused with acne, as they both can result in spots on the face. A key difference between the two is that acne tends to have comedones (blackheads and whiteheads) whereas rosacea doesn’t.

How does Skin + Me treat rosacea?

Our personalised treatments are designed to treat the spots (papules and pustules) and redness of rosacea to help you achieve clear skin and prevent future flare-ups. There are a wide variety of different treatments for rosacea, depending on your symptoms. Topical treatments (creams and gels) are usually the first choice for treating rosacea that’s mild to moderate in its severity. We use active ingredients with decades of evidence in treating rosacea – chosen specifically for your skin type and your skin goals. If you’re eligible for treatment, your personalised solution might include Metronidazole, Azelaic Acid and Niacinamide.

How long does it take to treat rosacea?

Every person is different, and while most will see results within 2-3 months on average, others might clear faster or take longer. Once your skin is clear, we’ll progress your treatment to a personalised solution that’s designed to maintain your results and keep your skin clear – which will work to prevent any future flare-ups. Often, the redness of rosacea can be harder to treat than the spots and in some cases, additional treatments might be needed. We’re always here to guide you through your treatment, whether you’ve got questions, need advice or want to change your formulation. We’ll check in with you to see how well you're responding, and whether you need a change in your treatment plan.

What type of rosacea do you treat?

Currently we offer treatments for the spots (also known as papules and pustules) and redness associated with rosacea. If you suffer with rosacea that causes redness or dilated blood vessels with no spots, thickening of the skin of your nose (phymatous rosacea) or affects your eyes (ocular rosacea), we’re not currently able to offer you treatment for this. While we’d love to be able to help you, in this situation, we’d advise that you see your GP or dermatologist.More about rosacea
