What is the menopause?
Menopause is medically defined as the point when a woman stops having menstrual periods for 12 consecutive months. It occurs when the ovaries stop producing eggs resulting in a drop in the sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone. The average age of women going through the menopause is 51 but symptoms of the perimenopause can start around the age of 45.
What are menopause symptoms?
There are 4 main stages to the menopause, each presents with varying symptoms.
- Pre-menopause: the time before any menopausal symptoms occur.
- Perimenopause: when hormone levels are changing but menstruation still occurs. Symptoms are: hot flushes, vaginal dryness, mood swings, irregular periods and disturbed sleep due to hormone changes. This stage can last several years.
- Menopause: occurs when the ovaries stop making oestrogen and there’s no menstrual period for 12 consecutive months. Symptoms are hot flushes, vaginal dryness, mood swings, low libido, digestive problems, irritability and skin problems.
- Post-menopause: the time after the menopause (not having a period for 12 consecutive months). Symptoms are osteoporosis, weight gain and loss of muscle mass.
What happens to menopausal skin?
Most of the cells in our skin have oestrogen receptors. Oestrogen plays an important role in our skin’s hydration, wound healing and the promotion of collagen and elastin (proteins that act like scaffolding for your skin). When you go through the menopause, the loss of oestrogen can result in:
- loss of collagen
- increased dryness
- itching
- impaired wound healing
Studies* show that 30% of collagen is lost in the first 5 years of menopause and 2% per year thereafter. The rapid loss of collagen leads to accelerated skin ageing like skin thinning, sagging and wrinkles.

How does Skin + Me treat menopausal skin?
Increasing your skin’s collagen production is vital to prevent and improve the accelerated skin-ageing that occurs during the menopause. Our dermatologist-designed combinations of active ingredients contain the most powerful, evidence-based treatments known to boost collagen. If you’re eligible for treatment, your personalised solution can include a combination of Tretinoin, Niacinamide and Azelaic Acid.
What are the benefits of using active ingredients on menopausal skin?
If you’re eligible for treatment after your online consultation with our team of dermatology experts, your personalised solution will include a combination of Tretinoin, Niacinamide and Azelaic Acid formulated in bespoke quantities, and tailored for your skin’s needs.
- Tretinoin (retinoic acid) is one of the most effective ingredients available to dermatologists when it comes to boosting collagen and preventing and treating the skin-ageing associated with the menopause and beyond. It’s around 20 times stronger than retinol, making it far more effective than anything you can buy over the counter. It works in the dermis (second layer of the skin) to increase collagen and elastin production as well as boosting production of glycosaminoglycans which plumps the skin. It’s the most effective topical treatment for slowing the progression and improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and is the only topical treatment approved by the FDA for this indication. Tretinoin also works to thicken the epidermis (top layer of the skin), reduce pigmentation and restore sun-damaged skin cells.
- Niacinamide is a powerful antioxidant which is well-tolerated by the skin and proven to boost collagen production to reduce fine lines and wrinkles as well as reducing water loss and improving skin elasticity. It’s an effective anti-inflammatory agent which minimises the risk of irritation from the hardworking Tretinoin and also works to treat unwanted hyperpigmentation.
- Azelaic Acid is a naturally occurring acid that has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which helps reduce any inflammation as well as improving overall skin texture. It also works to target hyperpigmentation by slowing down the production of melanin and helping to fight melasma and the pigmentation caused by sun damage and acne.
How long will it take to see results?
Every person is different and some might see visible changes in the mirror faster than others. By around 3 months, you should start to notice major improvements in your skin’s texture compared to when you first started. Deeper in your skin, collagen production is being boosted which should result in improvements in fine lines, prominent pores and a smoother, brighter complexion. After 6-12 months of consistent use you will really start to see the benefits. You will notice plumping of the skin and a significant improvement in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as well as unwanted pigmentation. The good news is that your treatment keeps working forever so with regular use you’ll continue to boost collagen production and maintain healthy, glowing skin. The more consistent you are, the better the results will be.
