Clear my spots
Banishing big spots? Breakouts? Blackheads? Adult, cystic or hormonal acne? You should start to see clearer skin in around 8 weeks, thanks to a choice of these acne-tackling ingredients:
References + medical evidence >Clindamycin
Clindamycin is an antibiotic that’s used to help fight acne by targeting Cutibacterium Acnes (4), the acne-causing bacteria that’s the culprit behind the inflammation, pus formation and big red spots.
An ingredient only available by prescription, Clindamycin helps to soothe inflammation in the skin, reducing the visible redness and swelling from acne. It’s the topical antibiotic of choice by dermatologists in the UK and across the US (8,9). To reduce the possibility of antibacterial resistance, Clindamycin is best combined with other ingredients like Azelaic Acid.
This ingredient is usually very well tolerated, but can occasionally cause some irritation – which can result in burning, itching, dryness or redness.
Azelaic Acid
Azelaic Acid is a naturally-occurring acid, produced by yeast, that gets to work on your skin goals in a few different, brilliant ways.
It acts as a chemical exfoliator which unblocks pores (10), as well as targeting and eliminating the acne-causing bacteria, Cutibacterium Acnes (4). Azelaic Acid is an antioxidant, fighting inflammation, reducing redness and treating the spots caused by acne and rosacea (4,19).
Azelaic Acid also slows down the production of melanin, helping to fight pigmentation caused by sun damage, melasma and acne (11,12). Its exfoliating properties have also been shown to improve skin texture, too (13).
For those just starting out using Azelaic Acid, irritation can sometimes occur as the skin adjusts to the ingredient. Usually, this irritation is mild and gets better as regular use of the treatment continues. Azelaic Acid can also sometimes cause skin discolouration and lightening – particularly in darker skin types.
Tretinoin
Tretinoin belongs to a family of drugs called retinoids, which are ingredients derived from Vitamin A. Tretinoin is a whole lot more powerful and effective than other members of the retinoid family, like retinol, which is why it’s only available on prescription.
An ingredient only available by prescription, Tretinoin gets to work by accelerating new skin cell growth which speeds up the removal of dead skin cells and debris that can block your pores (1). It also works to repair sun-damaged cells (2), and boosts the production of collagen (a protein that acts like scaffolding for the skin) (3). Oh, and it also helps to even out skin tone, discolouration and any inflammation. What a hero.
Tretinoin is used to fight acne (4,5), make pores less visible, and reduces fine lines and wrinkles (3). It’s also used to improve skin texture, and reduce the amount of abnormal pigmentation in the skin. It’s often used to treat pigmentation disorders such as melasma and sunlight-induced pigmentation (including freckles) (6).
Tretinoin has been shown to be 20 times more potent than the commonly used skincare ingredient retinol which is why it's more effective than what you can get on the high-street and the reason it's a prescription only ingredient (7)
Tretinoin’s most common side effects include dry skin, redness, irritation and mild peeling – which usually occur in the first few weeks of treatment, while your skin adjusts to this ingredient’s powerful properties.
There’s also a chance of purging too, which is where the increase in cell turnover can cause further temporary blocking of the pores you’re trying to unblock. This can appear as a few more blackheads, whiteheads or bigger, red spots that can take a few weeks to clear up again. While it can feel as though the treatment is making your skin worse, purging is actually a normal process in clearing your skin – a bit like a spring clean.
Tretinoin also increases your skin’s sensitivity to the sunshine (7), so it’s super important to apply your SPF (of at least 30) every morning.
Niacinamide
Niacinamide is a form of Vitamin B, and has been shown to have many different beneficial effects on the skin.
Niacinamide improves the visible appearance of fine lines and wrinkles (14), reduces hyperpigmentation (15), moisturises the skin and helps to regulate the skin’s oil production (16) – which helps to battle acne and rosacea (17).
Niacinamide also works as an antioxidant and helps to fight harmful compounds caused by sun damage. It also increases the production of ceramides, which moisturise the skin (18). This is especially useful in minimising some of the possible side effects of our other active ingredients.
Niacinamide is usually a very well tolerated active ingredient by most skin types. In rare instances, it has been known to cause mild stinging, slight redness or irritation.
